Whittier 360 to Provide America 250 Coverage From Washington, D.C.

Whittier 360 News Network will be reporting from Washington, D.C., during the nation’s America 250 celebrations after receiving approved press access to cover Freedom 250 Presents: The Great American State Fair on the National Mall.

Because of this national reporting opportunity, Whittier 360 will focus its Independence Day coverage this year on events in Washington, D.C., rather than the local Fourth of July celebration in Whittier.

The Great American State Fair is being held on the National Mall from June 25 through July 10 as part of the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of American independence. The event brings together exhibits, performances, cultural programming, state and territory showcases, military tributes, public attractions, and Independence Day programming in the heart of the nation’s capital.

For Whittier 360, the assignment is more than a travel story or a national event preview. It is an opportunity to provide local readers with a ground-level look at how the country is preparing to mark 250 years since the Declaration of Independence.

As an independent local journalist, I will be covering the atmosphere in Washington, the public response, the security presence, the historical symbolism, the political mood, and the people who travel to the National Mall to take part in this once-in-a-generation anniversary.

This coverage will also include a personal historical perspective. My own family history includes more than 16 Revolutionary-era ancestors connected to the founding generation of the United States. That background gives this assignment a special meaning as I report from the same city where the nation will gather to reflect on its founding, its struggles, its achievements, and its future.

Whittier 360 readers should not expect the same type of coverage they will see from national television networks. The goal is to provide an independent, local, on-the-ground view from Washington, D.C. — what the crowds look like, what people are saying, how the event feels in person, and what this anniversary means to everyday Americans.

Coverage will include photos, video, written updates, and observations from the National Mall and other historic sites in Washington, D.C., as time and access allow.

Whittier 360 News Network will continue to follow local issues in Whittier while also bringing readers this special national coverage from the capital during America’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
