WHITTIER, CA — Early election returns released Tuesday evening indicate a decisive shift in Whittier’s political landscape, with challengers holding commanding leads in all major races and incumbents facing steep odds as remaining ballots are counted.
As of approximately 8:34 p.m., James Becerra leads the mayoral race with 7,905 votes (67.80%), compared to Joe Vinatieri with 3,606 votes (30.93%). The margin of nearly 37 percentage points suggests a clear advantage that is unlikely to be reversed.
In City Council District 2, Vicky Santana has surged ahead with 2,162 votes (63.63%), while incumbent Octavio Martinez trails with 804 votes (23.66%). Other candidates remain in single digits. Santana’s lead of roughly 40 percentage points represents a dominant early performance across the district.
In City Council District 4, Aida Macedo leads with 2,367 votes (69.29%), followed by incumbent Fernando Dutra with 862 votes (25.23%) and Phil Longoria with 187 votes (5.47%). Macedo’s advantage exceeds 40 percentage points, signaling a strong consolidation of voter support.
Based on turnout data released prior to Election Day, a substantial portion of expected ballots had already been received. With early results now reflecting both vote-by-mail and initial Election Day ballots, current margins suggest that more than half of the likely total vote has already been counted.
Given the size of the leads in all three races, there is no clear mathematical path for trailing candidates to overcome the deficits, even with outstanding ballots remaining.
While official results will continue to be updated over the coming days as additional ballots are processed, the current returns strongly indicate that voters have delivered a clear and unified outcome across the mayoral and council contests.
Whittier 360 News Network will continue to monitor ballot counts and provide updates as they become available.
