The state of Pennsylvania played host to the first American congress and to the America's Constitutional Convention.
Prior to the arrival of Europeans, what is today Pennsylvania was the home of the Lenape, Susquehannock, Iroquois, Erie, Shawnee, Arandiqiouia, and other American Indian tribes. When the English first arrived on the shores, the natives welcomed them with open arms and even allied with them in exchange for more advanced European guns.
Originally it was not an English colony but rather of colony of independent minded Quakers. But during the 18th century it attracted a lot of German and Scots-Irish immigrants.
The Whiskey Rebellion took place in Pennsylvania.
During the US Civil War, much of the Union Army came from Pennsylvania. The state had become the first to abolish slavery, doing so in 1780, before the US Constitution was ratified.
