Whittier Launches Free All-Electric Shuttle Service: The Whittier Cruiser

The City of Whittier has officially launched the Whittier Cruiser, a free, all-electric shuttle service now operating within designated areas of the city. The service is funded by local Proposition C transportation funds and overseen by Metro Los Angeles.

What Is the Whittier Cruiser?

The Whittier Cruiser is an on-demand micro-transit service operated by Ride Circuit. It provides short-distance transportation using compact electric vehicles that seat up to five passengers. Unlike traditional public transit, the service does not operate on fixed routes or schedules.

Key Features

  • No fare required – the service is free to users

  • Electric vehicles – fully battery-powered

  • App-based – request rides via the Ride Circuit mobile app

  • Flexible routing – passengers choose pick-up and drop-off locations within the service area

Potential Impact on Local Residents

The introduction of the Whittier Cruiser is likely to impact residents in several ways:

  • Improved Mobility: Residents without access to a car—such as seniors, students, and low-income individuals—may find the service useful for local trips to grocery stores, libraries, parks, or appointments.

  • Reduced Parking Demand: The ability to park once and take the Cruiser for errands or recreation may reduce vehicle congestion and parking pressure, particularly in Uptown and near trailheads.

  • Support for Local Businesses: Businesses located within the service zone may benefit from increased foot traffic, especially from visitors using the Cruiser to access Uptown shops, restaurants, and events.

  • Environmental Benefits: With a fully electric fleet, the service may help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality over time, especially if residents substitute short car trips with shared rides.

  • Digital Access Needs: Because the service is app-based, residents without smartphones or mobile data may face barriers to participation. The City has not yet announced alternate ride-request methods for those without smartphones.

  • Traffic & Noise: While the vehicles are relatively quiet and small, residents in high-demand areas may notice more frequent stops or increased curbside activity as pick-ups and drop-offs occur.

Additional Notes

According to city officials, the Cruiser is part of a broader effort to expand access to sustainable transportation options. Public feedback and ridership data will help determine whether the program is expanded or modified in the future.

More information and updates will be available on the City of Whittier’s official website, the Ride Circuit app, and through periodic public briefings.
