In a surprising decision announced Friday morning, the City of Whittier has cancelled its annual 4th of July Freedom Walk at Palm Park, citing feedback from concerned residents amid heightened Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in the area.
The announcement came via a press release from Assistant City Manager Shannon DeLong, who noted that while the morning Freedom Walk has been canceled, the evening Fireworks Spectacular at York Field will proceed as planned.
“While celebrating our nation’s founding is very important to me and to Whittier residents,” said Mayor Joe Vinatieri in the official statement, “my colleagues and I also want to be sensitive to the recent feedback we’ve received from some community members asking that we pause this year’s Freedom Walk event.”
The statement did not directly mention ICE, but multiple sources within city government confirmed to Whittier 360 News Network that the cancellation stems from concerns that ongoing federal immigration enforcement operations could create fear or disruption at public events, especially in neighborhoods with high immigrant populations.
A Divided Reaction
The Freedom Walk, a patriotic tradition featuring community members, veterans, and civic leaders marching in celebration of American independence, was set to take place the morning of July 4 at Palm Park. Its cancellation has prompted a wide range of reactions, with some residents supporting the City’s sensitivity, while others are expressing frustration over what they see as a concession to fear or political pressure.
“Canceling a celebration of freedom because of ICE is deeply ironic,” one longtime Whittier resident told Whittier 360. “We should be honoring those who fought for liberty, not avoiding it.”
Others, however, view the decision as a necessary step to avoid escalating tensions or triggering fear among local families who may have undocumented members or mixed-status households.
What We Know About ICE Activity
Although details remain limited, Whittier 360 has confirmed reports that ICE has increased its visibility in parts of Southeast Los Angeles County, including Whittier, in recent weeks. Some residents have reported spotting unmarked SUVs near shopping centers and residential areas, and multiple advocacy groups have issued warnings on social media encouraging undocumented individuals to avoid public gatherings during the holiday weekend.
It remains unclear whether the ICE presence is part of a targeted operation or a broader enforcement strategy that coincides with the holiday.
City Still Moving Forward with Fireworks
Despite the cancellation of the Freedom Walk, the City emphasized that it remains committed to providing residents with a safe and joyful celebration.
The 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular at York Field will proceed as scheduled that evening, with food vendors, music, and a professional fireworks show.
